APPLE CHANGES MFI POLICY IN RESPONSE TO POP CHARGER KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN

Last week, after Apple pulled the plug on the POP multi-device charging station crowdfunding campaign, the device was set to claim the dubious honor of becoming the largest refund from a Kickstarter project to date. After exceeding its funding goal almost three times over, Apple informed the device’s creator, James Siminoff, that its licensing rules wouldn’t allow a device that featured both Lightning and 30-pin adapters. Apple says it has now reviewed its specifications, possibly giving POP the green light.
Available as AC-powered and portable battery-powered models, the POP is a minimalist all-in-one charger that features two USB ports on the underside of the unit, along with four retractable cords that were originally intended to charge Apple and micro-USB devices using a 30-pin/micro-USB combo tip. However, after the release of the iPhone 5, the design was changed to replace two of the 30-pin connectors with two Lightning connectors. It was here that Siminoff ran into trouble.
Although the device in its original form was part of Apple’s MFi (Made For iPod) program before the release of the iPhone 5, when it was submitted with the integration of Lightning connectors Siminoff was told it violated the technical specifications of Apple’s MFi license, which had been updated to forbid Lightning connectors featuring alongside any other connectors in a single device.

MICROSOFT ‘S DIGITS ALLOWS COMPUTER INTERACTION WITH HAND GESTURES

Microsoft’s research lab in Cambridge, UK has developed a new way to interact with the digital world using intuitive hand gestures. “Digits” uses 3 different IR cameras to track the positions of fingers with respect to each other.
One of the applications for this technology includes 3-D special interaction with a mobile device. Smartphones that can identify knuckle touch and fingernails

A modified smartphone, fitted with a small vibration sensor and running Harrison's Finger Sense software, listens for the acoustic and vibrational differences between the three different types of touch, the New Scientist reported.
A fingertip could select an object while a knuckle tap could work like the right-click on a computer mouse and open up a submenu, for example.
"A big problem with touchscreens right now is that they are very simplistic, relative to the capability of our hands. We could do so much more," Harrison said.

Review: Nexus tablet showcases Google media play

Over the summer, Google came out with a 7-inch tablet called the Nexus 7. Just as Apple is making an iPad Mini that's about the size of the Nexus 7, Google is now selling a larger version of the Nexus, about the size of Apple's regular iPad. It starts shipping this week.
On the Nexus 10, icons at the bottom of the screen emphasize Google's media products available through Play. Click on a picture of film to watch movies, headphones to listen to music and a book to, well, read books. Another icon gets you to the Play store to obtain more content and apps.
The base model with 16 gigabytes of storage costs $399. A 32 GB version goes for $499. Unlike the iPad, there is no 64 GB version, nor are there ones with cellular connectivity.
The Nexus 10 is sold at Google's online Play store in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Canada and Japan. The 32 GB version also is sold at some Wal-Mart stores in the U.S.
